The Split-Brain Wing
To stop severe seizures, surgeons once cut the corpus callosum — the thick cable of 200 million fibres joining your two hemispheres. The patients walked, talked, and went home fine. It took years for anyone to notice what had happened to them. In this room, you are the half that talks.

What just happened
You didn't lie. You couldn't have — you reported exactly what you saw, which was everything available to you. And every explanation you gave was invented after the fact to cover an action whose real cause you had no access to. You weren't guessing, either. It felt like knowing.
This is real, and it is not subtle. Flash WALK to a split-brain patient's right hemisphere and they stand up and head for the door. Ask why and they say, without hesitation: "I'm going to get a Coke." Show the right hemisphere a snow scene and the left hemisphere a chicken claw, then ask the left hand to pick a matching card and it picks a shovel — correctly. Ask the patient to explain the shovel and the talking half, which saw only a chicken, says: "You need a shovel to clean out the chicken shed." Instantly. Confidently. With no sense whatsoever of having made anything up.
Michael Gazzaniga named the thing doing this the interpreter: a module in the left hemisphere whose job is to produce a running explanation of what the person is doing. It is not a liar. It is a press office with excellent prose and no access to the decision room, and it has never once returned "no comment."
Why it matters — and it's about you, not them
Surgery didn't install the interpreter. Surgery only revealed it, by cutting off its supply of true information and letting everyone watch it keep working anyway. Yours is running right now, on an intact brain, doing the same job with better inputs.
It is why you can be short with someone and produce a reason that isn't the real one. Why blind-taste tests humiliate wine buyers who can explain their preferences beautifully. Why people given a post-hypnotic suggestion will open a window and explain, sincerely, that it felt stuffy. The reason arrives after the act, feels like it came first, and is delivered with total conviction — because the part of you generating the reason genuinely doesn't know it's doing so.
You met this machinery in Exhibit № 1, where your brain painted wallpaper over a hole in your vision rather than show you a gap. This is the same machine, working on your life. It does not hand you gaps. It hands you a story.
So how many of you are there?
Here's the part nobody has settled. After the surgery, is there one person with an odd new deficit — or two conscious beings sharing a skull, only one of whom can complain about it? The right hemisphere isn't a machine: it understands language, has preferences, gets frustrated. Some patients' left hand would unbutton a shirt the right hand had just buttoned, or reach for a spouse in anger. Roger Sperry won a Nobel for this work and thought the evidence pointed to two. Others argue the unity was never as total as it feels, in anyone — that you are already a coalition, and the surgery just widened a seam that was always there.
Which would mean the feeling of being exactly one person is not a report on the facts. It's the interpreter's finest work.
