The Word That Was Never There
You have spent several rooms discovering that your perception invents things. Fine -- perception is fast, and fast things cut corners. Memory feels different. Memory feels like looking something up.
Fifteen words are about to go past, one at a time. Just read them. Then we will ask you what you saw, and you will tell us, with confidence, about a word that was never on the screen.

What you remembered
The gist machine
Every word on that list was chosen for one reason: each is a close associate of a word that was never shown. Bed, rest, tired, dream, snooze, blanket, doze, slumber, nap -- the list is a constellation with a hole at the centre, and the hole is shaped like sleep.
This is the Deese–Roediger–McDermott paradigm, and its numbers are almost rude. In the original studies people falsely recalled the missing word at rates comparable to words that were actually presented -- and, crucially, they were as confident about it. Many report a specific recollection of seeing it. Some can tell you where on the list it came.
Your brain did not store fifteen words. It stored what the list was about, because that is almost always the useful thing to keep, and then reconstructed plausible contents from the gist when asked. The reconstruction is not marked as a reconstruction. It arrives wearing the same clothes as the real ones.
Remembering is not retrieval
The intuition this room is designed to break is the filing-cabinet one: that a memory is a stored item, retrieved more or less intact, possibly faded.
It isn't. Each act of remembering is a rebuild from fragments, gist, expectation and general knowledge -- and the rebuild happens fresh, now, in a brain that has learned things since. Worse, the rebuilt version is what gets stored back. Memories are re-saved every time they are opened, which means a memory you revisit often is not the best-preserved one. It is the most-edited.
None of that is a bug. A system that recorded verbatim would be enormous, slow, and largely useless, because almost nothing you need tomorrow depends on the exact words. Gist is the right thing to keep. The cost of keeping gist is that you cannot tell, from the inside, which of your memories are recordings and which are inferences -- and you have just proved that on yourself, with a stopwatch running, in a museum that warned you it was coming.
Where this gets serious
Elizabeth Loftus spent a career showing that this scales. Change one word in a question -- did the cars hit or smash -- and witnesses remember different speeds, and some remember broken glass that was never there. With a little suggestion and a few sessions, people can come to remember whole events that did not happen, in detail, with feeling, and defend them.
Eyewitness testimony is among the most persuasive evidence a jury ever hears, and confident, honest, mistaken identification has been a leading contributor to convictions later overturned by DNA. The witnesses were not lying. That is precisely the problem: sincerity and accuracy are separate variables, and the feeling of remembering is not evidence about where the memory came from.
And the room next door
You are about to walk into Exhibit № 19, which asks whether you are the same person as the one who started this museum, given that your parts keep being replaced.
Take this with you. The usual answer -- the one nearly everybody reaches for -- is that continuity of memory is what makes you the same person: I am the one who remembers being that child, therefore I am that child, grown.
You have just watched that thread be spun rather than retrieved. If the self is made of memory, and memory is a reconstruction assembled from gist by a brain with a strong sense of how the story ought to go, then the thread back to your childhood is not a recording. It is a nightly rebuild, by a system that has demonstrably just invented a word for you and handed it over with total confidence.

The paradigm is Deese (1959), revived by Roediger & McDermott (1995) -- the second paper is short, readable, and slightly gleeful. Elizabeth Loftus's Eyewitness Testimony and her later work on implanted memories are the important onward reading, and the Innocence Project keeps the running total of what the failure mode costs in years of other people's lives. Daniel Schacter's The Seven Sins of Memory is the best general account and is generous about why a system that works this way is a good design rather than a broken one.
One honest note: fifteen words and eight questions is a demonstration, not a measurement, and single-list versions of this vary a lot between people. If the lure did not catch you, that is not a sign of superior memory -- the effect is a population average, and this particular list is one of the milder ones.
