The Zombie Test
A philosophical zombie is a hypothetical being that walks, talks, laughs at podcasts, and files taxes exactly like you -- but with nobody home. No inner light. No felt experience whatsoever. This official screening quiz will determine whether you are one.

What just happened
Every answer you gave -- including the funny ones, including the indignant ones -- is an answer a zombie would give, in the same tone, with the same little laugh. Not because the quiz is badly designed (how dare you) but because answers are behavior, and the zombie does behavior flawlessly. What it lacks is the one thing behavior can't display: the inner feel. And no test, scan, or interrogation has ever been devised that can check for the inner feel directly. This keeps philosophers up at night -- assuming philosophers have experiences.
This is the Hard Problem of consciousness: explaining why all this busy, competent information-processing is accompanied by experience at all. The "easy" problems -- how the brain recognizes faces, steers attention, produces speech -- are merely decades-of-work hard. The Hard Problem is "we're not sure what an answer would even look like" hard.
Why it matters
Here is the strangely warm ending. You can't verify anyone's inner life: not your best friend's, not your dog's, not your mother's. Everyone you love is, technically, unverified. And yet you believe in them -- instantly, involuntarily, completely. That belief is one of the most reasonable unprovable things you'll ever do. The Hard Problem doesn't make other minds doubtful; it makes every one of them a small act of faith you were right to commit.
