The Invented In-Between

Below are three meshed gears, turning steadily — neighbours counter-rotating, as good gears must. Except: no. Every tooth is bolted in place. Nothing in this picture moves, has ever moved, or will ever move. The only thing happening is paint. So where is the turning happening? (Hint: it's reading this sentence.)

Press start. Then try to keep believing that nothing is moving.

No tooth has moved

Each tooth cycles through the same four colors — bright, mid, dim, faint — and each runs that cycle one step behind its neighbour. That's the entire mechanism. A wave of brightness travels around the ring, and your motion detectors — built to shout "thing moving!" whenever stimulation sweeps across the retina in sequence — dutifully report a turning gear. They cannot be talked out of it. Press mark one tooth and stare at the marked one: it sits perfectly still while the wheel keeps "turning" through it. Hold both thoughts at once. You can't, quite.

And reverse is the confession in mechanical form: real wheels have momentum, but this rotation flips instantly — there is nothing to slow down, only a phase order that just got renumbered.

It's the stadium wave: no fan ever leaves their seat, and the wave circles the stadium anyway. Marquee lights around an old theatre sign are this exact trick. And — one more turn of the screw — so is every screen you have ever watched. Pixels never move. You've been watching them chase each other your whole life.

Now strip it to the bone

Sixteen teeth are showbusiness. The laboratory version needs exactly two dots, taking turns blinking. Nothing between them — you can check the code. Slide the tempo up and watch yourself manufacture the journey.

Press start. Then slowly drag the tempo up and watch what your brain does.

What just happened

Somewhere on that slider, two polite blinking dots became one dot, bouncing back and forth. Feel free to check the source code of this page: there is no third dot. There is no bouncing. The motion was manufactured entirely inside you, on the spot, free of charge.

It gets better. The two dots are different colors — and most people see the imaginary traveling dot switch color midway across. Sit with that one. Your brain couldn't know the second color until the second dot appeared… and yet you saw the change happen before the dot "arrived." Your brain waited, gathered the facts, invented a little story about a journey, and then slipped the whole animation into your experience backdated. You watched an edited cut and experienced it as live.

Why it matters

This is called the phi phenomenon, and it's the reason movies work at all — a film is just still frames, politely taking turns. Your consciousness isn't a window; it's a production: buffered, interpolated, and edited for continuity by a staff you've never met, working about a tenth of a second ahead of the airdate. The color-switching version is the color phi phenomenon. Daniel Dennett made it famous in Consciousness Explained, a book whose title is doing some vigorous hand-waving of its own.
